Fort Benning sustains forest with controlled burn

FORT BENNING, GA - There might be some smoke in the Columbus and Fort Benning areas on the last day of 2012.

The Directorate of Public Works is conducting controlled/prescribed burn in the northeast portion of post today. Winds are favorable and smoke is not expected to escape post.

Prescribed burning helps maintain a healthy forest while providing quality lands to support the various Maneuver Center of Excellence training missions. It’s the key environmental management tool in sustaining the longleaf pine ecosystem.
